Targeting: A Guide to Meta and Google Targeting Options
Updated over a week ago

Reaching the right audience with your advertising campaigns is crucial. Each platform offers unique targeting options to help you connect with potential customers. This article delves into the targeting capabilities of Meta, Google, and LinkedIn, providing a comprehensive guide to help you maximize your advertising efforts. Let's explore how you can perfectly fine-tune your campaigns to hit your desired audience.

Meta

  • Age: Targeting options range from 18-65+, with exceptions for Thailand (20+) and Indonesia (21+).

  • Gender: Due to Meta's non-discrimination policies, gender-based targeting is not an option.

  • Interests: We utilize the available segments on Meta. Some of the interests need to be combined or re-used for different profiles. (e.g. front-end developer and back-end developer will use the interest “web development”)

  • Language: Set to "All languages", unless targeting a specific language in a country where it is not commonly spoken (e.g., Italian speakers in China).

  • Location: Target by country, region, or city. Targeting by zip code/postal code and excluding locations is currently not possible. Meta uses radius on locations with a minimum of 10 miles (17 km) in most countries and 15 miles (25 km) in the US and its territories, and the maximum radius is 50 miles (80 km).
Disclaimer: Meta uses various signals for location targeting, which may not always be completely accurate.

  • Restricted Countries/Locations: Targeting is not available for Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Russia, and the Ukrainian regions of Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, and Sevastopol.

Google

  • Age: Targeting options range from 18-65+.

  • Gender: All genders are selected by default.

  • Interests: Audience segments are based on the profile(s) selected during the campaign setup, which combine interests, in-market results, and demographics.

  • Language: Set to "All languages".

  • Location: Target by country, region, or city. Targeting by zip code/geocode is available for only specific countries (US, UK, Germany, India). Excluding locations is possible. Google uses a radius with a minimum of 1 km.

  • Restricted Countries/Locations: Targeting is not available for Crimea, Cuba, Donetsk People's Republic (DNR), Iran, Luhansk People's Republic (LNR), North Korea, Syria, and temporarily, Russia.
